Avaya, once Lucent, once AT&T, still makes a great system. We find them to be very dependable, very user friendly and moderately priced. It is a very simple system to program with an easy to read manual. The best customer for this system is one that has very simple needs such as a one layer auto-attendant, no need for multiple operators, no need to re-number the default extensions that are two digits and start at 10, no need for group mailboxes that allow more than one user to share a mailbox, no need for IP telephones at remote locations and no need to listen in on employees for monitoring and or training. Simply stated again it is a basic workhorse of a system that has stood the test of time for about two decades. It has been recently upgraded and is an exciting new product that is once again growing in popularity.
The ACS system comes standard with caller ID on all lines, 3 way conference calling, ability to call to busy stations, speaker phones, user programmable buttons, speed dialing and other features. Its maximum size is 15 lines and 40 stations, each station can be a digital system phone or a single line device such as a cordless phone, answering machine, credit card machine or regular home phone. It is the only current system that each station port has this capability.
We have installed hundreds of these systems in the area over the past twenty years with much success. In addition Avaya manufactures one of the most widely used network switches called the 5e, which run many of the major cites telephone networks throughout the world. Nortel is the most widely used business telephone system in the world. It is found in most every country and can be serviced by most any telephone technician. It has a few more features then the Avaya system and the telephones have the ability to migrate to the MICS system, which can power a company with hundreds of employees. It is another workhorse of a system with a two-decade track record of un-paralleled reliability. The best customer for this system would be one who is interested in extreme reliability and ease of use. The feature set is about the middle of the road as far as systems go with items such as 3 way conference calling, one touch internal and external speed dialing, speaker paging, music or tones on hold, date and time, call duration timer, long distance call restriction and easy telephone interface programming.
The systems maximum size is 8 lines and 24 digital stations. It comes standard with one analog port that is commonly used for adding a cordless telephone to the system so that you may answer calls in a large warehouse or while taking a break out side.
Through the years we have installed and serviced thousands of these systems and are really surprised when we are called out due to a system failure as these rarely break. Nortel is also a leading manufacturer of large telephone company central office switches called DMS switches. Most hospitals and call centers in the world use the Nortel Option switches that set the standard for large business systems in many ways.
